
Rajani- Kaha – Turmeric plant
Turmeric is an abundant plant in south Asian countries. In ancient times our ancestors have used
turmeric as a natural paint and as spices. It is highly used in Asian countries in cooking. Due to its
pleasant color, odour and taste people use it in preparing curries.
First turmeric was used as a dye and later it was used as an ayurvedic medicine as it has lot of medicinal
values.It is mainly used in internal treatments. Many medicinal recipes has been made using turmeric
which helps in many diseases.
In Ayurveda Turmeric is named as “Rajani”, “Nisha” “Harindra”.Due to the yellow color of turmeric
rhizome it is known as Harindra and due to sunset color it is called Rajani.
Scientific name of turmeric plant is Curcuma longa. Due to its disinfectant quality turmeric is used in skin
treatments. It is also used as ayurvedic medicine and also it is a highly valued plant species which is used
as spices in food.
In Ayurveda Turmeric is used as a single medicine or as a compound medicine to treat fungi, bacteria
and virus infections inside the body.
In traditional ayurvedic medicine turmeric is used as a valuable medicine. In external physical illnesses
like Joint pains, wounds, sores and also headache, migraine, respiratory system diseases; turmeric is
used as a pain killer. Similarly for asthma, cough, hiccups and liver related diseases turmeric is a good
medicine.
Turmeric usage in Patients with gastritis and gallstones should be limited. In controlling pain and body
swellings and to clean sores raw turmeric is used. Also turmeric is used to increase appetite aswell.
In traditional ayurvedic treatments; for each and every treatment turmeric is used. Due to its chemical
composition & pigments; it has a special ability in detoxification. Therefore it can prevent discoloring
and external injuries to skin.
Women use turmeric mainly in cosmetics purposes in beauty culture. Specially it can be used to
remove dark color of skin.
